CES 2013: NVIDIA Unveils Shield Handheld

January 7th, 2013

NVIDIA has unveiled a brand new handheld device running on Android that is simple with a clam-shell design and essentially tops onto an Xbox controller. Small, easy, and if you have large pockets, pocket friendly.

The new device codenamed Project Shield or Shield for short was shown off in Las Vegas during 2013 CES Expo.  Shield was shown off runningHawken and is able to stream from PC as well as stream Steam Big Picture as well as hook up to your television.

It has an HDMI port, micro-USB and micro-SD slots as well as a 3.5mm jack for audio. Features a 5 inch 720p Retinal multi-touch display with 294ppi Pixel density. The 33Wh battery provides 5-10 hours of game time or 24 hours of HD video playback. It runs pure Android without a skin, and allows Google apps for Gmail and the Play store.

Future plans are for Shield to be updated so you can stream data from PC to TV wirelessly via the Shield device. The very versatile system is looking to compete with the Ouya and Gamestick, two other Android based platforms which are due out in US and Canada in Q2 of this year.
