New PS3 CECH-4000 Spotted

July 5th, 2012

Rumblings on the internet seem to suggest that a brand new PS3 ‘Super-Slim’ model could be set for release.

Information surfaced on Japanese site PocketNews (via. NeoGAF) earlier today about a set documents from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The documents appear to show three different PlayStation models, two of which are the previous ‘fat’ PS3 and the current ‘slim’ PS3, meaning the third image is a new model known as the 4000 series.

Eurogamer have heard that a newer, slimmer, PS3 model will be announced during the German game show Gamescom next month. A reveal for Gamescom would not only be a big deal for the organisers, especially if Grand Theft Auto V is also shown at the event, but also for consumers as they get a taste of what the new hardware will look like.

All this information could be pretty accurate as according to a report on TSA, the latest PS3 firmware update 4.20 brought in some minor changes to the wording of the XMB system.

For instance “eject disk” became “remove disc” and the “Hard Disk” was referred to “Storage Media” too. This, along with the information found today, could mean that we’ll see a new PS3 model that doesn’t feature a slot loading disc drive but instead a top loading drive, and possibly a Solid State Drive, or proprietary format, over the removable hard drive found in current models.

You can check out the FCC images for yourself.
