Square-Enix have released an impressive real-time tech demo of their new Luminous Engine in the form of Agni’s Philiosophy – a Final Fantasy Realtime Demo.
Agni’s Philosophy could well be what a next-generation Final Fantasy game could look like, and by god it’s impressive.
The Luminous Engine is capable of creating real time visuals that are the same level as “pre-rendered computer graphics,” making fine details of the characters prevalent during gameplay and in engine cutscenes too.
Whilst Agni’s Philosophy is nothing more than a tech demo, it is set within the ideals of the Final Fantasy series, showing “ancient magic and advanced science” in a “near-futuristic world”.
Take a look at the credits and you’ll see that Agni’s Philosophy was produced and directed by Yoshihisa Hashimoto, with character design by Akira Iwata and with Takeshi Nozue as creative director. Tetsuy Nomura is also listed as a character design advisor and some members from the Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics are also listed as having lent assistance to its creation.
All in all Luminous Studio is designed to “bring about greater productivity within game production teams, whilst offering an environment to create games of fantastic quality.” Interestingly the engine is also planned to support consoles, PC’s, smartphones and the web, “encapsulating the many platforms of the next generation of quality.”
Square-Enix say that Agni’s Philosophy “showcases the level of quality that Square Enix is aiming for in next generation games,” and what a level of quality it is!
