We’re sure many of you here have experienced the wit and charming humor of The Naked Gun series of movies during some point of your life. Leslie Nielsen may have passed, but his role in the films hasn’t been forgotten. With that, DNA Interactive Ltd today released a iOS based homage to the series to continue its ridiculous police investigation cases that the franchise made its own during its time on the silver screen.
The Naked Gun I.C.U.P. is nothing more than a smartly crafted point and click investigation game. Like Broken Sword, only much more likely to have you blurt out a quick chuckle on the first class carriage of your preferred commuter train. While Nielsen’s character is respectively omitted from the game, his character’s son fills his silly cop shoes and it’s up to you to guide him through the town looking to solve the cases nobody else wants to, was offered, or would ever even class as a police case.
While the dubbing quality can sometimes question the recording booth’s integrity, A.J. LoCascio (of Back to the Future fame) does a great job of retaining that signature comedic charm Nielsen penned in the series. The script keeps other trademark characters intact and gives everyone their fair share of witty one-liners, mostly due to the series’ original story creator stepping back into the spotlight of the dusty writer’s dining table.
Solving crimes and occurrences around the town always manages to conjure more laughs. The cases are, quite frankly, idiotic; like they should be. Calling the shots early in the game, Frank’s first and longest case will be to retrieve the retirement watch of his late father, even if he has to “squash exactly 18 cockroaches to do it”. Long case collectables such as the cockroaches and missing case papers will have you scavenging around each scene for every last peice. Meanwhile you’ll be investigating call-outs addressing a robotic newspaper vending machine gone bad, returning donuts from the police department to disarm a bomb, or the much needed shooting of 4 “Angry Birds”. Every now and then you’ll be treated to a simple screen tapping shoot-out with enemies who pop up like cardboard targets. It breaks the forth wall many-a-time for your laughing pleasure too, and there are a lot more investigations that those mentioned above.
The Naked Gun I.C.U.P. for some reason brings a number of social game aspects to its core. Using “bucks” found around the game’s interactible cartoon scenery, you’ll out them to use by purchasing furniture for your drug den lavishly regal penthouse. Whether or not others can see it still raises the question of “why?”. It attempts to coerce you into the game at each available moment to collect the ever respawning cash deposits for very little reason. DNA Interactive state that this is only one of the episodes planned over the course of the next 18 months. So we’ll have more Frank to come soon.
Regardless, The Naked Gun I.C.U.P. pays good homage to the Hollywood classic idiot comedy. It’s quick one-liners and ludicrous police cases really do keep you involved in the simple activity of point and click, or in the case of an iOS device, poke and prod. It won’t quite have you in stitches, but chuckling will become a common occurrence itself.
Final Score 3.5/5
