February 16th, 2012

Today that colourful block company, Lego, and Minecraft developer, Mojang, have teamed up to reveal the first images and details about the Lego Minecraft Micro World.

Set to be released this summer for $34.99/€34.99, the companies have announced that you can pre-order the sets from today. Each set will contain individual cubes of which you can remove the surface of to revealed mines and hidden resources below. You also get a Creeper and Steve models in the set.

Markus “Notch” Persson said at a press conference in Denmark this morning: “I played a lot with Lego bricks as a child, and that’s influenced how I make games. I prefer games with levels that are modifiable. I don’t like static levels.

“There are problems of scaling. Minecraft has huge long tunnels, and you can’t really fit that in to a living room. But I think the Lego guys have created something that’s really great, that really feels like Minecraft.”

Paal Smith-Meyer, Lego’s new business group head, had this to add: “Lego Minecraft Micro World is designed to celebrate the essence of the Lego concept and the Minecraft gaming experience.”

The idea for a Minecraft Lego set came about thanks to Lego CUUSOO, a site where fans can come up with ideas for new Lego sets. Unsurprisingly Minecraft’s huge following ensured it easily got to the top of the boards.

You can pre-order the sets at Jinx.com. One per-cent of all sales revenue will be donated to charity too, so you can help others by helping yourself.
