Black Ops beats Modern Warfare 3

It would seem that even though Modern Warfare 3 was, unsurprisingly, the biggest selling game of 2011, it would seem that in 2010 Black Ops beat it by a considerable amount.

MCV have reported that, according to information from ERA’s 2011 UK Entertainment charts, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 2,814,609 copies in the UK between its release on November 8th and the end of 2011. By comparison Black Ops sold 3,266,298 copies in the same time period.

That means that Activision sold 451,789 copies less of their new entry into the franchise, thats nearly half a million less!

Maybe it shouldn’t be as surprising, 2011 finished 13 percent lower than 2010; even EA’s FIFA suffered a blow. Fifa 11 sold 2,193,302 copies, whilst Fifa 12 managed to sell 196,929 copies less than that this year.

  • Why Black Ops may have bt MW3 January 12, 2012 at 7:32 pm Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 12 Thumb down 9

I would say that the most obvious reason why Black Ops may have beaten MW3 is down to the fact that MW2 was so good. Gamers were hungry for more of MW2 and would have expected Black Ops to be more of the same if not better but to many, it was not and indeed many thought it was quite poor.

Therefore, when all the hype about MW3 was about, it may well have been that people were not to quick to go for the hype of MW3 as they had been let down by Black Ops following all that went in to that launch.

Exactly. MW2 was just one patch away from perfection, I guess most people thought that Black Ops would be that proverbial patch. It wasn’t. In the end, the abysmal lag issues deterred me away from all future iterations of the series. It was fun while it lasted.

I liked Black Ops, I thought is was good blast, then again I take Call of Duty games for the fun sections rather than competitiveness so they all seem like ‘good to have some fun for a while games’. I think the COD formula overall is starting to wear a little, and Fifa may be suffering from the same issue.

There’s a pattern forming here which Fifa 13 and Cod 9 (I think) will confirm end of this year. I personally love to play different games, genre constantly and am thus a ‘chain-gamer’ as I term it so it helps to keep things fresh. Bioware are doing right by ending Mass Effect’s story in part 3. Trilogies and Quads I can do, but more than that is hard.

Saying that, I’ve played all the Assassin’s Cree console games and am prepping for AC3. Once that ends the story, Ubi will take a 2/3 year break and bring it back, but I’m not sure I’ll invest so much into it again. I may be getting old, but surely there is only so many sequels you can invest time into while there is so many other cool games/variety in the market, especially this far into the current gen. I’ll stop now (I hope ppl actually read this comment, lol)
