New Cave Story 3D Screenshots

With Cave Story 3D for the Nintendo 3DS looming ever closer to release, the guys over at NIS America have just let out some brand new screenshots of the Sandzone area. From the images you can see its 3D conversion is working wonderfully and, for those who played the original, it is staying faithful to the original pixel art design aesthetic it previously had (and still does with a flick of a switch!)

Cave Story is a 2D side scrolling shooter that has multiple endings, a weapons upgrade system and an incredible soundtrack and storyline. NIS America are revamping this PC indie classic, and WiiWare game, into a 3DS title with superior graphics, and obviously 3D depth.

Cave Story 3D is available in NA November 2011

    Why?

It’s a 2d game! it’s now been “cheapened” by introducing 3D in my mind. Looks like a generic game now, well done… !

I’m very sorry if the use of 3D has cheapened the experience, but its just there to provide depth to the world you are in rather than make it some sort of novelty extravaganza. If I’m honest I’m just going to play through it in the original pixel mode, because I absolutely love the PC original. It is one of the most beautiful games I’ve played and I adore the chiptune soundtrack too! Its still worth picking up, I assure you.

I couldn’t agree more, the original was spot on!
Other than 3d spacial depth I can’t see what else it would offer. I just hope it doesn’t distract from the game itself which, in my mind, was more about the story and game-play not the graphics.
Maybe it’ll look better on the 3ds, just the screen-shots above make it look so average…
