A little messy on my first official mission from the brotherhood. Got the job done though!...
Halloween is almost dawning and what gets me into the mood for Halloween is all the horror titles that are out there. Some are great classics while others are done poorly and quite laughable. I am a big horror fan/gamer and there has been many titles out there that give that horror vibe but, what is the scariest video game out there. Well, everyone has a list they like to give but, here is my list of TOP 10 HORROR/SCARIEST GAMES OF 2010!
For my list of this top 10, the game must be classified as a horror title, and I must only pick one game per developer and franchise and finally my terms on scariest.
10.) Deadly Premonition
Devloper: Access Games
Why it’s Scary: This game could be GOTY
Ok, some people are going to say “What! That’s not a scary game.” Yes I know but, it is a horror title but, what’s really scary is this title could possibility be GOTY. Deadly Premonition is a low-budget title for the price of $20 and Deadly Premonition is starting to become that cult classic in the gaming community. So what’s scary about Deadly Premonition? Well, it’s scary because of how entertaining the story is and the potential it has. Can you say GOTY?
9.) Alone in the Dark (1992 version)
Why it’s Scary: Setting within a mansion, terrible Camera angles, and overall gritty story
Alone in the Dark for the PS3, 360, and Wii wasn’t on par with previous Alone in the Dark games but, it doesn’t hold up to the original version back in 1992. Alone in the Dark showed 3D horror was going to be the next big thing. Alone in the Dark had great puzzles and compelling story that lead though a creepy mansion full of monsters, puzzles, and traps. Combat was decent but, when unarmed it was way more frightening. The only way to kill the monster was to actually complete the puzzle. Alone in the Dark was creepy and you never knew what was going to be around the next corner.
8.) Clock Tower (SNES and Playstation)
Developer: Human Entertainment
Why it’s Scary: High Tension value, Non-combat fighting, uncanny story
If I was to choose which Clock Tower game that would make the list, it has to be the original Clock Tower for the SNES and Playstation. It’s hard to pick which one is better or which one was scarier but, both versions did their parts to scare us. I picked Clock Tower not just for the story but, for the gameplay. Gameplay was a point and click horror game, which the only defense against Scissorman was to run away and hide which puts on the tension and would scare us most of the time. Clock Tower II was ok but, the story lacked, and Clock Tower 3 put on the tension but, combat was laughable. (Yes, there was a bow in Clock Tower 3.) This is why,the oringinal Clock Tower will be the best in the series in my heart for the good story, noncombat gameplay, and atmosphere. If a man with giant scissor is after you, you would run too.
7.) System Shock 2
Developer: Irrational games and Looking Glass Studios
Why it’s Scary: Horror in FPS form, Creepy sounds and atmosphere
Yet again, System Shock 2 appears on a top 10 list of horror/scariest games. It does this all the time due to the fact that it terrorizes most people. The immersive atmosphere, creepy monsters, and sound just make System Shock 2 that creepy. It’s also an awesome game to play back in the day when PC gaming ruled. System Shock 2 just has horror written all over it. System Shock 2 shows how a real first person shooter horror title is made. System Shock 2 is also another title that would change the horror genre and bring on a game we call BioShock.
6.) Resident Evil (PSOne and GameCube Version)
Why it’s Scary: Bad Camera Angles, Mansion setting, Tension when in Combat, Out Numbered
Now a top ten horror list would not be complete without a Resident Evil game but, which one. Well, I was thinking long and hard to choose which one it would be and the only one that fits the bill is Resident Evil. When Resident Evil first release on the PlayStation One, I was nearly 10 years old and this game would give me nightmares for playing it and it also got me into zombies. The atmosphere, bad camera, and sounds made the game that scary. When the GameCube remastered version was release, I was excited to relive my scared childhood days when the game was release in 2002. I was prepared, but CAPCOM did so well to improve the scare factor into it. Overall the remastered version still gave me the jump here and there but, is one hell of a great remastered version of a cult classic. Another good thing about the GameCube version was that it never had a crappy live action intro. Thank you CAPCOM
5.) Dead Space
Developer: EA Redwood Shores
Why it’s Scary: It’s in Space no one can hear you, intense atmosphere, and frightening enemies
We haven’t seen horror titles taken into space in a long time and most of them are set on earth and use folklore, legends, myths and more to scare us. Well, Dead Space said “No” to that and takes it up into deep space. The setting of Dead Space really sets this title piece apart from other horror titles. In the mist of deep space and no one can hear you scream can really set someone nerves into a chill. Along with an alien disease that spreads and killing everyone on board and you are that lucky guy who got pick to go on that mission to found out whats happen. Yea, you should be scared. The reason why Dead Space gets this spot is due to the fact it has high tension in combat, along with the multiple enemies that come out of nowhere and contiue to come with full force. Space can really be a scary place.
4.) Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Developer: Frictional Games
Why it’s Scary: Its very Dark, Sanity meter, unsetting atmosphere and creatures
Frictional Games only made two different horror titles. One being Penumbra and the other Amnesia: The Dark Descent. So which one of those two will get the spot it rightfully gets. Well that game will be Amnesia: The Dark Descent, their latest horror title. Frictional Games ia a great developer who makes really in-depth horror games. Amnesia gets the spot due to everything that Amnesia is as a horror title. Amnesia uses a sanity meter like other game where if it decreases, your character will start going crazy and will be detected by creatures much easier. Amnesia also gives the player no weapons, so the only way to survive is to run. Amnesia is a great horror title that horror gamers will love.
3.) Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
Why it’s Scary: First ever Sanity Meter, Really gets into your mind
The first to intro duce that Sanity meter was Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. With the combine Sanity meter, Eternal Darkness was a complete compelling game that scares many people with monsters, glitches, sounds, and even with the classic GameCube “breaking.” Which were all part of the Sanity meter your character has. This was a unique concept that many of the horror games are using today. Besides the Sanity meter making us scared that our Gamecube was about to die or errors happening, Eternal Darkness still has scary moments even without the Sanity Meter.
2.)Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse
Why it’s Scary: It a game dealing with many creepy ghost, atmosphere and story are unsetting, and the sights and sounds of things not being there then being there.
Between all the Fatal Frame games, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly was on top of many lists. Well, not on this one. Don’t get me wrong Fatal Frame II was a scary game from the get go but, I chose Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse cause the scary factor is high on this one and maybe eveb better then Fatal Frame II. Some might disagree but, it’s my list. Many U.S. and European gamers missed out on this installment and many of them just imported the game from Japan to just play. In my words, Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is the scariest Fatal Frame in the series. Ghost coming out of nowhere, scary atmosphere, unforgettable story and setting, along with the screams and sounds within Fatal Frame IV will give that unsetting feeling. Japanese horror games are always fun and frightening at the same time.
1.) Silent Hill
Developer: Team Silent
Why it’s Scary: Creepy atmosphere, sights, and sounds
Which Silent Hill will take this spot? Well, some people may say that Silent Hill 2 is the scariest and other will say Silent Hill 3. Well in my opinion it has to be the original Silent Hill. Silent Hill will give any players chills down their spine. Silent Hill is also considered as one of the Scariest Games of all time. In my book it is and it will even make veterans of horror games jump in terror, even today. Anyone remember the school ghost scene? I do.
Thanks for viewing everyone, comment below if you liked the list, or if you can think of a better list or whereever.
Thanks you again and HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
